Alexander's Egypt: The Material Culture

The novel A Toga in the Wind about a young Alexander the Alabarch living in Egypt in the first half of first century A.D.


Roman era Sandals. Recovered from the ruins of Roman era villages around Lake Moeris in the Arsinoite Nome.

Roman era oil lamps, each would fit in the palm of one's hand. Olive oil (or another oil) is poured into the hole in the center. Then a wick made of twisted reed or other material is placed in the end and lit.

Roman era handblown glass from Karanis. When the ruins of the village of Karanis were excavated, many pieces of handblown glass were recovered.
